What is it?
DSLT (Direct Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty) is a laser treatment used to help lower the pressure inside the eye in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. By lowering eye pressure, DSLT can help manage and prevent further progression of these conditions.
How does it work?
In glaucoma and ocular hypertension, fluid can build up inside the eye when it does not drain away efficiently. This can cause the pressure inside the eye to increase.
During DSLT laser energy is applied to the drainage tissue of the eye, resulting in increased aqueous outflow and reduced intraocular pressure.
Your doctor will assess your eyes and discuss whether DSLT is suitable for you.
What to expect
DSLT is normally performed during a single appointment at the clinic.
Your doctor will instill an anaesthetic eye drop to make the treatment as comfortable as possible. A small device called a speculum will be used to keep the eye open and prevent blinking during the procedure.
You will be positioned in front of the laser device sitting upright/or standing with your chin and forehead supported. You will see a small red light, which you will be asked to focus on during treatment.
The laser treatment itself lasts only a few seconds.
You will see flashes of light, similar to a camera flash, during the procedure. Most patients find DSLT comfortable and without pain.
You may need to use eye drops following treatment and have your eye pressure checked before leaving the clinic.
This is because the pressure inside the eye can temporarily increase immediately after laser treatment. If your eye pressure rises, your doctor may give you medication in the clinic to bring it back down.
Your doctor will advise you about any medication and follow-up you require after treatment.
